The Loss of Civility

I am currently reading Dana Perino's book, "And the Good News Is...".  It is a really easy read, full of good advice, fun stories of her life, and interesting bits about President George W. Bush.

I just read a section that spoke on the loss of civility in society, in general, and in politics, particularly.  Imagine if she had written her book after the fiasco that is the presidential race today!

I cannot remember a race during my lifetime where name calling and insulting speech was so rampant.  It is quite embarrassing to tell you the truth.  It pains me to hear candidates calling each other liars, especially when they are probably doing it themselves.

Personally, I am getting pretty tired of hearing Donald Trump speak.  In the beginning I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt and look at the possibility that perhaps he could be good for the country.  Unfortunately, he failed to notice he was no longer on his reality show and act like an adult.  The man has acted like a schoolyard bully.  The way he called Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, "Little Marco" and "Lyin Ted" came across as the bully on the playground trying to intimidate them.  He lost and benefit of the doubt I was giving him.

Unfortunately, no one is going to bow out to allow a good fight against Trump and he will most likely be the Republican nominee.

Then we end up with the Democratic Party who has placed a Socialist and a possibly soon-to-be indicted former Secretary of State up for election.  So far, the name calling between the two has been minimal, but the names against the Republicans are flying.

We seem to have gone from a civil electoral process to bully tactics and name calling.  Now, we pick a person because of skin color, gender, or who can best capitalize on the anger of the people.  It seems like the actual issues are unimportant.  The American people are so tired of the lack of action in Washington, D.C. that they are willing to overlook lacking qualifications and childish behavior and vote for anyone.

Donald Trump wants to "Make America Great Again" and Hillary Clinton wants to "Make America Whole Again".  I would settle for respected again.  Right now, I think the world is laughing at us.
